August 25th Celebration Reminders

Worship Sunday, August 25th Processional will begin at 10 a.m.

Before the processional at 9:45 a.m., there will be music in the sanctuary as a prelude to worship.

Quilts: If the quilt you loaned for display this month does not have an identifying tag, please fill one out using the card available at the table at the back of the sanctuary. Add your name and a little information about the quilt and pin it to your quilt.

Church Potluck: Bring your food for the potluck to the church kitchen between 9:15 and 10 am. Warming ovens will be available and we'll keep cold dishes refrigerated until the service is over. Power connections for crockpots. The dessert table will be located in Fellowship Hall.  Labels are available for dishes that are gluten-free or contain nuts.

150th T-shirt:  We would love for everyone to wear their 150th t-shirt if you have one.

Guests: Name tags for guests will be available at the Welcome Center. Be sure to wear yours and introduce yourself. Be aware that the parking lot will be filling up early and consider leaving spaces closer to the building for our guests and those needing handicapped parking.  Your favorite pew spot may be occupied, but you'll find another pew nearby. If you're bringing guests, tour the church grounds with them -- the outdoor chapel, the Little Blessings garden and playground, the flowers blooming all around.

Olivia Young from Channel 4 CBS, the reporter for Douglas County, will be interviewing the pastor and others about our church history and community outreach.

Things to do:

  • Enjoy the piano music (and sing along!) with Rainier, Micah, and Beckett Lapidus as you wait in the buffet line.

  • Visit with old friends, former clergy, and members. Make some new friends. Invite folks back.

  • Make a star for our 2024 Advent Project, or watch others make one. You may take one or more home to decorate later.

  • During lunch, a video slide show featuring our church history, community outreach, various ministries, and fellowship will play on a continuing loop.

  • Church History booklets will be available for purchase at the Welcome Center. $7 for the reprinted booklet covering 1874-1974, $5 for the new booklet covering 1974-2024; buy both for $10. Laryce Nitsch and her history team did a fabulous job putting this together.

  • Stroll around the sanctuary to view the quilts, the new additions to our history kiosk, the painting commemorating the Christmas Eve blizzard of 1982, and if you haven't seen it lately, take the back stairs down to check out the Little Blessings setting.

  • After lunch, as the crowd dwindles down to the last few people, extra hands to help clean up and put things away is appreciated. Don't forget to pick up your serving dish.

This Sesquicentennial Celebration could not have happened without everyone's participation, encouragement, and enthusiasm. The Steering Committee appreciates all who have volunteered their time and talent. A huge thank you to everyone for making the entire year and especially this special day of celebration a success.

The Meals Support Team Need You

also known as Helping Hands, is seeking meal providers and volunteers. Members are asked to provide meals for individuals recovering from surgery, illness, or in need of short-term support. Cooking is simple and typically required only a few times a year. Requests are sent via email or text for specific days, with information on recipient preferences provided. To join or rejoin, use the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or contact Julie Curran.

Flying W Ranch on Sunday, September 8: The evening promises to be a fun event with a barbecue chuck wagon dinner and cowboy music. Sunday, August 18 is the last day to sign up for the trip to the Flying W Ranch in Colorado Springs. There church bus and carpools are available. We have nearly 40 people signed up. Costs are $65 adult, $60 senior/military, $30 for children ages 3-12. Checks payable to FUMCCR may be placed in the collection plate or given to Julie Bailey or Theresa Packard. Please tag your check “Flying W.” Please make payment by September 1.

Help Is Needed

Are you looking for a way to help on Sundays? Are you looking for something that only requires a commitment of one Sunday a month? Helping with coffee and donuts on the third or fourth Sunday may be just the volunteer job for you. Please contact Lisa Andrews or Rosie Andrade and we fill you in on the details.

New Sessions for Contemporary Issues

The next book: Grace in the Gray by Mike Donehey

The book helps us see the grace and good that’s often hidden by our own limited perspectives and assumptions. It all begins by learning to listen and lead with the most transformative substance the universe has ever known — God’s love.

In Person Sessions, Mondays  July 29, 2024 to August 26, 2024; 6:30PM to 8:30

Zoom Sessions, Fridays  August 2, 2024 to August 30, 2024; 6:30PM to 8:30PM

Our Summer Pop-Up Choir is off to a great start. If you’d like to sing with us this summer at the 8:30 service, just “pop in” at 8 am to warm up and mic test in the Outdoor Chapel, or just “pop up” and join us in the hymn of the day. The hymns chosen for the summer season are familiar tunes we’ve sung for years. If you are a musician/musician who would like to share your talents with a solo or duet, contact Rev. Matt or Nancy Docksey to be placed on the schedule.

Choirs Return to Fall Schedule

Chancel Choir will resume rehearsals at 5:30 pm on August 28. The summer pop-up choir worked out so well, we hope some will consider joining.

Bell Choir resumes their fall rehearsals on the same day, meeting between 4 and 5 pm.

Check with Nancy Docksey (303-877-9085)

if you have questions.

2024-2025 Meal Groups Info

Last year we brought back what we called Dinner for 8 Groups which we transformed the name to fit better to Meal Groups. This is a time to get to know new people over a meal at least three times from September- May.

We will have signups all throughout August for those interested in joining a meal group. These meal groups will have a Core Group Leader who will help plan and guide the groups on when and where to meet. Last year we had 8 groups and hope to have that many this coming year.

If you would like to lead a meal group or have questions let Pastor Matt know.

Bishops Installation service October 13th - 2 pm at First UMC, Colorado Springs, CO Pastor Matt will drive the CHurch bus down for those who want to attend.

Quote & Prayer of the Week

I simply can’t build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery, and death… I think… peace and tranquillity will return again.’ – Anne Frank

Loving God, As we step into this new week, we ask for Your peace to surround us. Calm our minds, ease our worries, and help us to trust in Your goodness. May Your love guide our actions, and may we find rest in Your presence. Keep our hearts steady and our spirits strong, so that we may be a source of peace to those around us.

Loving God we lift up to you…
